Ubuntu is quite clear on where it stands. Ubuntu is free, it is based on debian,
gnome, python.  I really like the fact that Ubuntu comes on 1 cd.  There are
significant advantages in development, support, testing, and integration in
choosing to base ubuntu on a single desktop technology.

Remember that just a few months ago noone had heard about ubuntu, and now ubuntu
is quite successful and popular.  I believe that a large part of the success is
due to the project's focus, direction, keep it simple, just works philosophy. 

Also, as has been pointed out there are several good kde based linux
distributions that may be of interest to the author, but please leave Ubuntu as
it is.
