good command-line audio player?

Hey people,

I have an app trying to play .wav files via "play" from sox.
Unfortunately it doesn't play through esd, and if I have music playing
through xmms, I get no sound. 

Does anyone know a good command-line player that plays .wav files, and
is also esd aware?
