If you don't need esd to make desktop sounds, you can kill esd nd use
the alsa output plugin in xmms, everything will work properly.
Esd sucks badly, I have choopy output with rhythmbox if I don't
uninstall gstreamer-esd, can't have any sounds in any games (neverball,
ut2k4) w/o killng it, and also it is going to be replaced by polyaudio.
Short answer: don't use esd unless you need one shot desktop sounds.
