how can i upgrade to ati 3.14.6 drivers?

I followed exactly the instructions, I also removed the nvidia driver
as mentioned in the howto, but it still says " Mesa GLX Indirect" and
3d grafics are very slow...

OpenGL version string: 1.3 Mesa 4.0.4
Any idea what to do?
