I view our web-presence as in important thing as we do have a very broad
geographic spread.
The purpose of a site, I feel, is more dynamic than a wiki. A wiki can be
edited and such, and could list various ways to contact the team (mailing
list, site irc, forums, etc), but doesn't always provide easy integration
with other resources. Creating content on the wiki, however allows
information to be centralized (with the Ubuntu project, site) and can be
found easily by rest of the Ubuntu community.
A website, however, is a good a place that we could send a new user to.
They wouldn't have to try to figure out how to use a forum if they've never
been introduced to one online, how to use IRC if they never have, and they
would be able to find the following information:
- What is Ubuntu?
- What is Ubuntu Wisconsin?
- Where to get help?
- How to help?
- Who other members are, where they are located?
- Calendar of events, meetings - The issues are
- making it easy for folks to integrate our calendar data with their
other calendar solutions (ical, xml, etc)
- making it easy for us to integrate the upcoming events into our wiki
and/or web page. We don't want double-maintenance of data.
- making it easy to link it with other Ubuntu event listing like
http://fridge.ubuntu.com/event and Lucid Release Schedule
-
- Links to local support options: probably wouldn't be changing
frequently
- Links to Resources: Ubuntu documentation, the team's Launchpad, forum,
etc
- Projects
- Meeting schedule, info (online/in person)
This is an example of a site that is easy to navigate with a lot of
information mentioned above: http://ohio.ubuntu-us.org/
Also speaking of meetings, these would be a great place to discuss ideas
like this.
Also, addressing
> What do we do, exactly?
The LoCo servers a few different purposes. I'm trying to get the framework
in place throughout the state to provide a, as described in the title, Local
Community of Ubuntu enthusiasts together to support each other. We can
offer advice and help to each other, support on the forums, irc channel, and
mailing list, have online meetings to discuss topics from hardware, to
software, to how the week is going. We can have meetings and presentations
on how to get more from Ubuntu, educate new users on the benefits of Ubuntu,
advocate Ubuntu throughout the state, and anything else we decide.
