[ubuntu-us-mn] Cannot access home directory for new users

I have configured Ubuntu server 8.1 for the first time. I created 2 users and the home directories. Samba is also configured.
When I browse to the \\ubuntu\home\user from a Windows PC, I get a credentials box presented to me. Only the password field is available for me to enter anything. The server box is filled in \\ubuntu\guest is dimmed in the box.
Could someone explain to me on how I could get authenticated from the Ubuntu server?
I have just installed Ubuntu for the first time. I feel that I am making some progress but I am a little confused on a few things.
I have reason to believe that my issue is in the smb.conf file, but I am confused on how it should be configured.
