We do? I thought that we generally at least verified that someone was
related to the group?
What do other groups of comparable size do?

In this instance, she has a semi-public online identity that involves
her sexuality and not much involving her real life identity. While she's
open about her sexuality to the world at large and if asked, she doesn't
desire to be advertising it to her students or parents of students
(which would be the case if she used her real life identity when
publicly talking about her sexuality).
The somewhat disconnected identities may not seem like a good security
measure for absolute disassociation between the two identities, but it
works well enough that she doesn't have to worry about paranoid parents
prodding her about things that aren't related to teaching their
children.

Right. In this particular instance it's not as relevant. I was arguing
for the more general case of allowing for someone who wishes to separate
their online and actual identities. I bet that in most instances, an
association with ubuntu-us-ma would be a positive one.
