Oh it's not crucial, you'll have to forgive me if I've put it across
like this is something that desperately needs doing; it's just that
ubuntu are surprised by how we run our launchpad team, we grant
everyone membership.

The it depends, it sounds like the teacher in question is not willing
for their sexuality to become public, thus talking about it in public
is probably not the best thing to do. Basically it amounts to being
able to take responsibility for what you say in public, the arena is
different from the private world and this is causing a lot of trouble
with people who don't understand the difference.

In this instance if the teacher were to join ubuntu-us-ma I would
recommend that they not talk about anything they don't want their
students to be able to find.
