Correct, a reinstall is the only way.

There are two 64bit x86-ish architectures.  AMD did it first, and theirs was 
called amd64.  Everybody started doing 64bit versions of software based on 
that.  Then Intel came up with Itanium (IA64) and tried to convince people to 
switch. That failed, so now they license the amd64 architecture from AMD for 
use in their CPUs. If you're referring to a Core 2 something-or-other, amd64 
is correct.
