[DC LoCo] 64 bit question

I recently learned to do this:

more /proc/cpuinfo | grep lm

Text is returned, and, apparently lm = long mode, which means the cpu is
64 bit.

When I do:

uname -a

this is returned:

Linux madtux-desktop 2.6.28-13-generic #45-Ubuntu SMP Tue Jun 30
19:49:51 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux

Since I do NOT see x6_64, my OS is 32 bit.

I AM NOT VERY TECH/ADMIN inclined, but just get by.....I am assuming
there is no step-by-step (fairly easy) method of getting to 64 bit
OS...without wiping and installing again?

Second ?, then I stop: the 64 bit Ubuntu downloads have amd in the
filename. My CPU is Intel.....is 64 bit AMD = 64 bit Intel? (Probably
stupid, I apologize.)
