[CoLoCo] Letter to FIRST Robotics about Linux

Andrew,

If I can help, let me know. I sponsor the Mesa Computer Programming Club at Skyline High School in Longmont. There's a big push to get us to have a FIRST team. They're also strongly hinting that I sponsor this team. My main reluctance has been the fact that there is no Linux support. Our Programming Club runs 100% on FOSS whenever possible. When they approached me with the offer for FIRST funding (someone is willing to foot the bill for $7000+), the first thing I did was try to find out as much as I could about their software.

Thanks,
Richard Guenther

Andrew,
I read your letter draft and think it's fantastic. You should definitely bulk it up with more examples of current teams that use Linux and also offer a few more examples of how Linux might benefit the teams using it (
i.e. learning command line interfaces, working with robotics at a "low level", etc.).

I would try to get as much support from the other FIRST teams before sending this in to the official committee so that they can co-sign it. In any case, great idea! Let me know how I can help!

Cheers,
David

OK, everyone... I'm writing a letter to FIRST Robotics in hopes they will seriously consider supporting Linux or at least Linux users who want to participate. This is my rough draft, and obviously need work. I'd like some input on anything to include or change.

I like Jim's idea that I should add something about schools who may not have enough money to use windows.

Jong Dong also suggested that I offer up myself as a Linux community contact.

I appreciate anyones help, and feel free to add something to this and email me a copy back if you like.

Thanks,
