He also argues that while XP may be supported by Microsoft until Windows 7
is released, that third-party applications may no longer be supported on XP,
having gone to Vista only. What utter nonsense!
I have yet to see any new software product that doesn't support 2000, or
even 98. I will admit that this is based solely on my own experience, since
I don't purchase software for the company I work for, but it just doesn't
make sense that software vendors will not support the most recent versions
of windows. Finding some software that is Vista compatabile, on the other
hand, can be more tricky. I have a few apps on my Vista box that don't
*quite* work correctly because the developer has not gotten around to
updating the app for Vista.
XP, while it does have it's problems, works fine for most things, and for
the most part, people have no valid reason to upgrade, unless they are
purchasing new equipment (which will most likely come with it). Vista
itself, IMO is not a bad OS. It does, however, take some getting used to.
Once you're aware of the differences, it's not much more of a switch than it
was from 98 to XP. Personally, I like the difference, as well as the
security they have built into it (the dreaded UAC). Once you realize
exactly how it does help you, the occasional (and yes, it is occasional!)
UAC pop-up is nothing.
It seems to me that Gartner has become a MS schill, and I've lost all
respect for them.
