Hey everyone,
I wanted to fire out this email for a couple of reasons. First thank you
Corey for securing the space for us. It was an excellent space and one I
wouldn't mind using in the future. One thing I noticed about holding it in
the burbs, the silly city folks didn't come out like they typically do. I
would also like to say thanks to everyone who showed up as well and made it
eventful. Well at least I hope it was eventful.
I spoke with a few of you concerning the different ways to get involved,
and some of the ways I mentioned I would like to quickly document with some
links to their respective wiki pages so you can get more information.
Marketing
---------
Link: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MarketingTeam
The Marketing Team is the team that leads a lot of the various grass roots
marketing campaigns and have some really nice projects for people to work
on who might be interested in this type of work. It was one of the easiest
ways to start getting involved in the Ubuntu project.
Artwork
-------
Link: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork
The Artwork Team(s) are involved with making Ubuntu and the various
projects pretty. I don't have much experience in this department as I am
absolutely horrible at any type of artwork. I know a few of the members,
and the leader of the entire project is actually from the Chicagoland area,
though he has since defected and moved to Germany.
Documentation
-------------
Link: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DocumentationTeam
The Documentation Team is responsible for maintaining the system
documentation that gets installed with every release. The team also helps
administer and maintain the https://help.ubuntu.com/community wiki pages
which are filled with tons of user documentation. This is another,
somewhat easy, way to get involved in the Ubuntu project. System
documentation is written in DocBook/XML, which is similar to HTML markup in
way. It isn't that difficult to pick up and luckily they have great
documentation:
* http://www.docbook.org/tdg5/en/html/docbook.html
* http://www.docbook.org
If you are interested in documentation, the following are the contacts for
the various Ubuntu subteams in documentation:
* Ubuntu: Matthew East (IRC: mdke) https://launchpad.net/~mdke
* Kubuntu: Me/Jonathan Jesse (IRC: jjesse) https://launchpad.net/~jjesse
* Xubuntu: Jim Campbell (IRC: j1mc) https://launchpad.net/~jwcampbell
* Edubuntu: Jordan Mantha (IRC: LaserJock) https://launchpad.net/~laserjock
The mailing list is located at
https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-doc
Packaging
---------
Link: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MOTU - Universe and Multiverse packagers
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuDevelopment - General information
There are 2 main types of packaging teams in Ubuntu, though this is more
than likely going to change in the future due to the archive reorganization
process that is due out soon. Core Developers are responsible for the
packages in the Main and Restricted respositories and the MOTU are
responsible for the packages in the Universe and Multiverse repositories.
While at the jam I brought up some documents to familiarize yourself with,
they are:
* Debian Policy Manual http://www.debian.org/doc/devel-manuals#policy
* Debian Developer's Ref http://www.debian.org/doc/devel-manuals#devref
* Debian NM Guide http://www.debian.org/doc/devel-manuals#maint-guide
* Ubuntu Pkg Guide https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PackagingGuide
If you have any questions on any of the ways of getting involved, please do
not hesitate to get in contact with me. Thanks again everyone! Now get to
work! :)
