Hm, maybe he changed a monitor setting via the GUI, which would have
modified his xorg.conf file. Seeing at that file controls the configuration
of the X display, that is where I would start.
What he can try is to use the Live CD to mount his root partition, and then
enter "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" into a terminal session. This
will take him through a video display configuration. He would need to know
what graphics chip (nvidia, intel, etc) is installed in his laptop prior to
doing this so he can select the right graphics driver, though. He can use
the Live CD to research the laptop specs on the internet if necessary.
Encourage him to make a backup of this file once he gets it working. If he
messes with his video settings and things get goofed up again, he can just
copy the working version over the nonworking version.
