Hi,

My advice is to firstly backup all important data (never had a problem
but Murphy's law...)
Secondly download boot-repair-
 https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Boot-Repair
and install to a USB drive, then if grub does get confused you can
re-install just grub rather than entire system!

Then proceed as you were going to!
