We realised that it probably broke because of a bad update.

The solution is to update again. "Huh?", you say. The reasoning behind
it is that either something downloaded incorrectly, or more often that
a bug was uploaded but has now been fixed. Updating the list of
packages (the "update" parameter) and re-running the upgrade
("dist-upgrade" or "full-upgrade" - they mean the same thing but the
former is deprecated) quite often fixes things, provided of course
that you can get a network connection... :-)
