As others have already posted, any hard drive *will* fail eventually,
and all brands produce duff batches from time to time. Samsung drives
are generally considered amongst the quietest drives around, but aren't
all that cheap. Maxtor are effectively Seagate's budget range these
days, so I'm not too confident in their quality. Western Digital have
recently produced some power-efficient drives (their 'Green Power' series).
Although you say you're after an external drive, it's often cheaper to
buy an external caddy (either USB, Firewire or external SATA) and fit
the drive of your choice. EBuyer have something suitable at
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/119512.
Depending on the amount of data you're backing up, an external 2.5"
drive might be an option - removing the need for a separate power lead,
since they can be powered via USB.
