I want to help translate ubuntu into german language

Hi,

I want to contribute to the (k)ubuntu project by translating it into 
german.
Can someone give me a general overview of how things are done and which 
parts still need to be translated? I looked at the information at the 
ubuntu website, but that sounded like people just search for things that 
still are in englisch and then go and translate on their own. Is that 
how it's done?

Does someone out there have a project running that he would need help with?
