[ubuntu-studio-users] hardware/mobo recommendations...

I have an i7 3770k (with an Asus P8Z77-V LE MB) as well as an AMD 8350
(with a 990FXA-UD3 MB. The Intel is faster and a lot cooler (temperature
wise). Both are EFI based but both can boot in what they call "Legacy"
mode. Both worked out of the box for me with Ubuntu 13.04. I only tested
12.10 on the Intel since I did not have the AMD at the time.

Functionally both work, Linux seems to make better use of the 8 core AMD,
though I would still give the edge to Intel. In particular with large
amounts of RAM. I have 32 GiB of 1866 RAM which run at full speed on the
Intel, but only 1600Mhz on the AMD. If I drop the amount of RAM to 8 GiB
then they run at full speed.

If the choice was an i5 or 8350, I might give the edge (but only slightly)
to the AMD. If you put the i7 into the mix then there is no competition
IMO. If I had to choose only one system, I would stick with the Intel.

Hth,
