What this does is to increase the maximum frequency that an unprivileged
process can request from the RTC.  Newer systems have a high performance
clock, so the key might be: dev.hpet.max-user-freq.  Either way the
default value is 64.

This just makes sure that the midi module is loaded, which does not
always happen automatically.

I have never changed the timer option but then I have never bothered
with firewire devices (not worth the pain IMO).
