Play Bass with M-Audio Delta 66

nice overview of setting up direct bass/guitar.  good to have in the
archives.  however, i have never seen the following additions
to /etc/sysctl.conf and /etc/modules.  can you explain (even briefly)
what they do?  i have neither and i "seem" to have a sorta/kinda working
FA-66 UBS 8.04 setup.
