The problem is a lack of developers more than anything else. But also I
think the gtk devs in particular could take a page from the QT method. QT
seems to have compatability libs that allow a qt2 program to run with qt3
for example. The reason we have lost GCDMaster is because gtk/gnome2 libs
are no longer available. Now much of the indicator stuff has been moved to
gtk4 while xfce sits in gtk3 :P LXDE is now looking at switching their
whole DE to QT. It seems at least some of the Ubuntu development is headed
the same way.

Anyway, xfce is getting upgraded to the new libs, but the devs are few and
while it was hoped to be ready for 13.10, it was not and may not be ready
for 14.04 :(

So now, xfce is spending time and effort just keeping up with libs rather
than expanding and improving xfce.

KDE seems to be fine. Install Kubuntu then install ubuntustudio-installer.
This will allow you to install our menu, kernel and whatever metas you
like. There are two tweaks needed to get rt permitions working (both
simple) and it is probably best to removed the generic kernel so you know
which one you will boot to by default. I will probably make up an audio
settings package that will do these tweaks and force the lowlatency kernel
as default. If it will be a ubuntustudio package or not I am not sure yet.
