For people wanting "picky recording", remember that PulseAudio is very 
configurable, by modifying the stuff in 
/usr/share/pulseaudio/alsa-mixer/paths. In your case, you might want the 
"mic" to control "Capture" only, and change "Mic Boost" manually through 
alsamixer, since the quality difference is prominent for you. This is 
fairly easy to accomplish by modifying PulseAudio's configuration files 
(just comment out the entire "[Element Mic Boost]" section in 
analog-input-mic.conf).
