I have some nice stats for you:

Server: Sun Fire X2200, 4GB RAM, 2x Opteron 2210 (1.8Ghz)
Number of servicechecks: 3900
Number of hostchecks: 678 (so that many hosts (according to Nagios) are
checked. I guess it's really about 400 hosts)
Load on the server: between 2 and 2.5

So Nagios is quite efficient. :)
