Yes, by default the Ubuntu LAMP install just puts in the server
components needed, with no desktop environment. Many server
installations do not require a desktop setup after all, since
including one (either Gnome or KDE) would pretty much use most of the
resources that running servers could use (memory, CPU time, disk
space, etc...)
Installing a desktop on the same server is actually easy; just do an
`apt-get install ubuntu-desktop`.
