to install gcc etc do
sudo apt-get install build-essential

That should get you up and going if you need to compile any thing

For codes dvd playback MS Fonts etc
I'd try one of the third party projects for ease of use and speed if nothing
else

http://www.getautomatix.com/

Openoffice, gimp etc come installed
