[Bug 1589508] [NEW] New mail notification no longer plays sound in Trusty

Public bug reported:

New mail sound no longer plays. Navigating, in Thunderbird, to Edit->Preferences on the General tab in the "When new message arrive:" section, hitting the play button produces no sound. If I select "Use the following sound file" and browse to /usr/share/sounds/ubuntu/stereo/message.ogg and hit play still no sound. If, using the file manager, I navigate to /usr/share/sounds/ubuntu/stereo/message.ogg and double click the file it does play a sound, so the sound system does work outside of Thunderbird. Also today I noticed the envelope in the notification area is not turning blue on a new mail.
Running Thunderbird in safe-mode does not solve the problem.
