I responded too fast, it seems it's a Flash library in LD_PRELOAD causing the problems.
The standard environment is set up like this:
LD_PRELOAD=/opt/trinity/lib/kgtk/libkgtk2.so:/usr/lib/libnspr4.so

With:
LD_PRELOAD=/opt/trinity/lib/kgtk/libkgtk2.so firefox

Works without problems. I'm not sure why this library is in LD_PRELOAD.
But this seems to be related to the hang.
