This is now fixed _ thanks to Linux buddy Joe Slim
Looks like the problem was with libmoon
- Moonlight is a free Silverlight clone, allowing Free Software systems
to run embedded web-browser objects or standalone code targetting
Microsoft
Silverlight.
Here is what I discovered and how it was fixed.
1. This problem appears to be triggered by some web pages e.g.
http://www.bbc.co.uk and looks like it is a pluging / media related
Works
2. Terminal
user at computer:~$ firefox
{then In Firefox GUI attempt to open page that causes a
crash e.g. http://www.bbc.co.uk
Firefox crashes}
Attempting to load the system libmoon
user at computer:~$
3. Using synaptic 'Completely Removed' package libmoon
4. Firefox now works
5. Using synaptic installed package libmoon
6. Firefox still works

Thank you for reporting this to Ubuntu. Sometimes Firefox profiles can
become corrupt and/or extensions can conflict. Could you please try
this with a new profile and see if the problem still exists? You do not
need to delete your old profile to test. If this helps, you might want
to try to disable all your extensions and re-enable them one by one
until you find the problematic one.
You can start the profile manager with the following command:
firefox -ProfileManager
