Sorry, should have added I'm running Gnome UI for Hardy 8.04

uname gives
Linux acer-jn-u 2.6.22-14-generic #1 SMP Tue Feb 12 07:42:25 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux

Be glad to supply other info.

I can sometimes work around with Ctrl-Alt-Bsp and relogin. Other times
have to reboot. Restarting the app is not enough.
