I have had many crashes of this sort over the last few days. /var/crash is EMPTY -- this is a really nasty one. It affects (for me so far)
Firefox
Thunderbird (trying to attach files)
OpenOffice (writer, presentations)
gedit

The symptom is that the whole application crashes i.e., when composing
msg in TBird, click Attach and "poof" -- no TBird.
