Hey guys, first off, I would like to say thank you very much for this
great discussion that we're having. Since launching tap 48 hours ago ,
we've got a lot of feedback about using IRC for authentication and such.
Since releasing, we've had anywhere from "that's a really good idea", to
"wow this is a major security hole, we will never use this.". Seeing that
more people have been with the later, and we really value Ubuntu as a
community, we're going to be changing our policy and allowing you to sign up
to tap ( also with Twitter/Facebook Connect ) , and allow you to validate
your IRC credentials by simply telling us your nick, which we will then send
you a memo with a key which you can plugin to our site and we'll have all
your moderation credentials linked up. Terence actually came up with the
idea, and we (tap) really thank him and the Ubuntu community for that, as we
may have not thought about it ourselves!

idleone:

No worries about anything; it's completely understandable that people
would think negative things about this looking in hindsight. We really
didn't anticipate people reacting in the way they did ( seems obvious now,
but it was not when we first released, I suppose ).

Jospeh:

I've had a few lengthy discussions with some IRC operators ( werdan7,
lorenz ), and we've been talking about creating either a partnership or
working something out, as we do not want to encroach on the Freenode.
Though with our new solution it seems we will be able to have Freenode out
of the mix when it comes to authenticating, so we should be able to move
forward without any problems for Freenode, Users, and tap.

I'll keep you guys posted as to how things are coming along, as we're
writing the software today and hopefully the solution can be implemented
within the next day or so.

Thanks again for all the feedback and thoughts, we really appreciate it!

Taso
