Stepping down from the IRC team

Aloha,
Firstly let me say, Ive only recently joined this mailing list, and going
on this thread alone and I am shocked and appalled at some peoples
behaviour. A Number of points have been raised and Im going to address a
few that have stuck out like sore thumbs.
Firstly, Mez stepping down be it the straw that broke the camels back or a
number of incidents leading up to it, it still happened. Youve still lost
an IRC Op. Which isnt really what we want to see happening, now is it!
Perhaps it may have been best had he gone down a different path with regards
to how to handle it, but he had his reasons and chose the ML to let us know.
Secondly, there seems to have been a lot of finger pointing, and allusions
to events or people doing things as an Op. Thats not helpful. Its childish
playground behaviour. We should do better.
My viewes on Ubuntu IRC Ops is this, its a hard thankless job and Im sure
its hard on days when youve had enough of saying the same thing over and
over again. However, if you feel tired or drained and quiet frankly pissed
off, then today really isnt the day to be an Op, remove yourself from the
situation and take a break?
I do find some ops more heavy handed than others and I can see where one op
may handle things a lot better than another or perhaps not rise to the bait
by trolls. With that, I would like to see ops only be in the role for a
period of 6 months to a max 1 year. Allow a rotation of some sort.
People are always going to clash, were all different and bring a uniqueness
to the community which is what makes it so. We need to remember this when
were dealing with one another. This week Ive seen on here a lot of ganging
up and quiet frankly its appalling behaviour from Ubuntu members and
members of the community.
Ive been an ubuntu user for a long time, and a ubuntu member for a while
and it saddens me to see this sort of behaviour as it reflects badly on
everyone involved and creates an atmosphere of unease and distrust, and
issues such as these surely should be handled in a grown up manner without
anyone resorting to ganging up on or otherwise behaving in a manner so
seemingly contradictory to ubuntu's own code of conduct.
The lack of dignity and respect portrayed by the ML posts, from either side
of the fence, is far removed from what one would have expected from a
community which historically has been so well managed and in which every
contributor has always been seen to show one another respect regardless of
differing views.
