Engineering courses in most of universities I am aware of don't even
talk about any industry related tools. ex. build tools like make and
ant, protocols like ssh and vnc etc. So open source and linux don't
even exist for them.

But this doesn't mean that we can't do it. Doing this on personal
basis will be a good start. For example those of us who are working in
industry already can design courses about various tools and conduct
them in their colleges ans and when possible.
