+1 for removing it completely.
I don't think that I understand the point of marking out external pages.
The only reason I can think of is as a very subtle trust message -
"warning this link goes to an external site, we are not responsible for
its content" that some sites have. In which case it's pretty
undiscoverable (and untrue when linking to h.u.c for example).
I do think it makes some pages ugly though. I don't feel strongly about
it either way but bikeshedding is fun :)
