I agree completely that this should be an option. I can think of
countless reasons why people would want this disabled (for example,
Ubuntu is used in a lot of Internet cafes, you're going to need to be
able to turn off logging there).

Fortunately, this seems to be in progress upstream:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=567858

However, until that is fixed, the only solution is to use Pidgin or
periodically delete the log files.
