these are usually driver related issues ... and depend on your hardware.
If you are a broadcom user, there probably is not much you can do as broadcom
drivers are closed source. If you run atheros or some other hardware with free
drivers, you might be able to contribute upstream; the project that does most
of the wifi driver work is http://linuxwireless.org/.
