We should do both. It's useful to have a people.canonical.com for Ubuntu
users but there should be a version of people.ubuntu.com, accessible
through launchpad accounts, that's available to all Ubuntu members.

You are absolutely correct to bring this up. Let's write up a
specification for how this transition will work and what we will create
to replace people.ubuntu.com (on a technical level) and get in as a goal
during the next release cycle. If you think that an official CC blessing
is necessary, I'm happy to do my part to push for it.
