How sure are you that it's the CD drive that's crashing the system? As
far as I know, the IBM 300PL computers are Intel based Pentium II and
III's, which means that booting from a Kubuntu PowerPC CD would most
certainly crash the system.

Have you tried booting from an XF86 CD?
