Hello,
It appears that the CDRW drive that I have is crashing my whole Linux
system. It is a Ricoh MP 7083A.
At first, I was trying to install Kubuntu on my machine using this
drive. I was able to start the process but while booting I had a system
crash at 'Mounting the FileSystem'. I does this each time whit this drive.
So what I did to solve this problem is to add another drive to read the
live CD of Kubuntu. Using this second drive, I was able to install
Kubuntu without problem.
But now when I insert a disk in the Ricoh drive, it crash the whole
system. I've tried with both an audio CD and a CDRW disc. The result is
the same, a few seconds after the disk is inserted, the whole system
crash without giving any feedback (the usual dialog asking what to do
whit the CD does not appear). It freezes. My other CD drive works perfectly.
Another thing that I did is trying to boot while inserting an audio CD
at the startup. It start to boot and it crash at the hardware abstract
layer loading process.
If I look at my fstab file, I have no line for the Ricoh drive. Another
weird thing that I notice is that both 'cdrom' and 'cdrw ' in /dev are
pointing to 'hdd'. Remember that I have another CD drive on my system.
I made a search about this problem and I found this interesting link:
http://kerneltrap.org/node/4351 (Search in the page for 7083)
I don't know what to do from there. I hope this report will be useful.
