Binary Nvidia driver vs. corrupted usplash (RFC)

I need some guidance here. The Nvidia binary evilness drivers are broken
and don't restore the terminal on console switch:

  https://launchpad.net/bugs/32389

one workaround for this is to remove 'splash' from the kernel command line
by $some method.

The easiest one I can see to achieve this (rather than hacking around with
the grub config) is just to have the Nvidia binary driver---which has to be
manually installed---Conflict: with 'usplash', which should in turn cause an
initramfs rebuild.

This would have the nasty and scary effect of telling the user that
'ubuntu-desktop' is going to be removed.

I need some suggestions and guidance on what the best way to stop usplash
being loaded when the Nvidia drivers are likely to be in use.

Another option might be to add a hook to 'initramfs-tools' so that packages
can touch this file and have usplash skipped.
