Devicescape and softmac are two different solutions to the same problem. 
Devicescape has more features - softmac builds on what was already in 
the kernel and so was easier to integrate first. It's likely that 
Devicescape will be used instead in future.

We actually already have that patch in the Ubuntu kernels.
