Wrong. Softmac is only an addition to the in-kernel stack to support cards  
without hardware mac. On the other side devicescape is a complete wireless  
stack, way more advanced then the in-kernel one, with support for virtual  
interfaces and master mode for example. The fact that it handles softmac  
cards as well is just one of the features :)
