^^^ this here is an argument for moving Ubuntu up to i586 <offtopic>;
I've had similar with a 350MHz K6-2 with 192M RAM, it took 5 tries to
install Dapper and each try took 20 minutes to get to the desktop.
The other side of it is of course that even microbenchmarks have a hard
time quantifying the gain; so i486 vs i586 vs i686 is smoke and mirrors.
Back on topic, you're quite right. We need to see some profiling of
memory usage, system calls, and library calls (enter strace/ltrace); a
lot of the programs here are slow and bloated and fixing that will get
us back on track.
