Fade to black in xscreensaver and Gnome

You should try "New login" and then logging in as yourself and resuming 
the session -- there is a *very* nice fade that happens, why can't that 
be used, is it not smooth on all machines or?

The gk-sudo fade wasn't slow on my machine, but it didn't look 100% 
perfect. It's probably much worse on different machines or slower 
machines. So that is a good reason to get rid of it.
