I'll have another go at the ranting, then...

Brightside seems to be a nifty little app, but it sort of proves my 
point: it also requires xscreensaver to work (as does everything else, 
it seems, except the "Lock screen" menu entry in the System menu). No 
luck at all with gnome-screensaver :-(
