That didn't change anything.

The working and non-working ram-disk are of different formats:
root at sal:/tmp# file /boot/initrd.img-2.6.12-3-amd64-k8-smp
/boot/initrd.img-2.6.12-3-amd64-k8-smp: Linux Compressed ROM File System data, little endian size 5988352 version #2 sorted_dirs CRC 0x407f3203, edition 0, 4368 blocks, 343 files
root at sal:/tmp# file /boot/initrd.img-2.6.12-8-amd64-k8-smp
/boot/initrd.img-2.6.12-8-amd64-k8-smp: gzip compressed data, from Unix, max compression
root at sal:/tmp#

The last is a compressed cpio-archive, does that change anything?
