AMD64-SMP kernel in Breezy dont boot.

Try booting into your old kernel and rebuilding the initramfs for the new
kernel. On my 686 machine, I would do it like this:

  mkinitramfs -o /boot/initrd.img-2.6.12-8-686 2.6.12-8-686

You will want to use the right version number for your -8 amd64 kernel.

If that doesn't work, what storage subsystem and disks do you have running
in your system?
