I investigated it and found that the patch is highly non-trivial to port
to current syslinux, so I mailed the SuSE developer responsible. He
responded very quickly to say that he would be finished with the port
today or tomorrow, and that the patch is much smaller now (yay!).

I'll go and do other things in the meantime, but if SuSE come through
then it sounds promising.
