I've been able to run Firefox on my ancient 333MHz, 96Meg laptop quite
smoothly. Although it does seem to take a little extra time in loading
on to the system (maybe ten seconds or so), once it's there, it seldom
cranks too hard at any page I open up.
The version of Linux I used was DSL (since Ubuntu Live! turned my
laptop into a catatonic wreck). DSL's Firefox is a pre-1.0 release; I
dunno if that would make a difference. I kinda doubt it, though, since
the Firefox on my Win2000 partition can hold its own pretty well. I
surfed for hours on it just the other night, with nary a burp.
... although it did, come to think of it, get rather kludgy when I
tried running it with font smoothing turned on.
What desktop were you using at the time? Did you try Firefox on any of
the ones you mentioned? Although I thought DSL's Fluxbox looked a
little too Old School for my tastes, I was impressed with how smoothly
everything on it ran on my steam-powered contraption.
